SUMMARY:Social Capital of NFP Directors in Australia
DESCRIPTION:Invited Speaker\nMarion Cornish\nHuman Resource/Industrial Relations Manager \nCertificate of attendance available \n \n Certificate of attendance\n \nThis week Marion Cornish will give a presentation: “Social Capital of NFP Directors in Australia” followed by a discussion. \nThis study of non-executive directors on Australian disability service not-for profit boards\, reveals a group of social elites\, who utilise\, often unconsciously\, their skills\, education and networks to enact symbolic power\, represented by strategic cognition in the disability services field in Australia. This social and cultural ratification in the NFP space provides theses directors with the opportunity to align a previously `cleft habitus’ (Bourdieu\, 2000; Ingram & Abrahams\, 2016). Beforehand\, their view of their life history was dominated by their lives spent in the competitive commercial social space. The decision to accept a NFP directorship provides an opportunity for these directors to attain an enhanced identification with their overall life story and history\, or a ‘reconciled’ habitus (Ingram & Abrahams\, 2016\, p.148). Methodological constraints encountered in this study are considered. \nTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nAbout the presenter:\nMarion Cornish is an experienced Lecturer with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. SUMMARY:Cui bono and social capital: Understanding the white savior
DESCRIPTION:Invited Speaker\nSamantha Stevens\nPhD student in the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa\, Canada \nCertificate of attendance available \n \n Certificate of attendance\n \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KmCZr4hAO0 \nIn order to address the ongoing inaction by the Canadian government regarding mercury contamination in Grassy Narrows First Nations\, my current research examines the moves to innocence enacted by the government. Using recent research on the white saviour trope and the legal concept of cui bono as central concepts\, I am examining if social capital can provide the bar by which to determine if an altruistic intervention provides suitable benefits to both sides of a historically unbalanced power dynamic.Time converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nAbout the presenter:\nI am currently a PhD student in the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa\, Canada.
