SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Dr Mario Marais: The role of Social Capital in ICT4D
DESCRIPTION:Invited Speaker\nDr Mario Marais\nPrincipal Researcher\nCouncil for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) \nCertificate of attendance available \n \n Certificate of attendance\n \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5-RUZDekLw \nThis talk tells the story of a project and a research approach. The research used a novel definition of sustainable development that emerged from development philosophies developed in South America. The concept of Social Capital(SC) is central to this definition and SC was used to study the sustainability of participants in a project to deploy internet access to schools in a rural region in South Africa. A novel support model was used by selecting local post-school youth for entrepreneurial attitudes and then training these so-called “Village Operators” as on-site technical support. Their job was to maintain wireless-mesh networks serving clusters of schools and the in-school internet access. Intensive small business training and mentoring was provided while the project was running. The business performance of VO businesses could be evaluated\, but it was difficult to determine why some succeeded and some did not. The research question was: What are the sources of support and the business strategies used to grow their businesses?Time converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nAbout the presenter:\nMario A. Marais is a Principal Researcher in the e-Government Impact Area of the CSIR\, based in Pretoria\, South Africa (SA). He has more than 15 years of experience in development research in organisational\, entrepreneurial and community levels. Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) work has been done from social capital\, knowledge creation\, systems thinking\, sustainability and behavioural change perspectives. Relational mapping approaches have used platforms such as https://kumu.io. He holds a PhD in Informatics awarded by the University of Pretoria in 2017 with the title “Social capital in the Village Operator model for ruralbroadband internet access and use”. https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3302-1230.CSIR expert profile: https://www.csir.co.za/mario-marais.E-mail:mmarais@csir.co.zaTwitter: @mmaraisPublications: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Mario_Marais \nAbout Our Webinar Series\nThis event is part of our regular webinar sessions for social capital researchers including PhD/master students. SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Prof. Sally Davenport: Social Capital Ideas and the Building of a Mission-Led Research Programme
DESCRIPTION:Invited Speaker\nProfessor Sally Davenport\nProfessor of Management\nVictoria University Business School \nCertificate of attendance available \n \n Certificate of attendance\n \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-w1-O0H3Pw \nCollaboration\, and more of it\, is often called for across many walks of life\, the assumption being that more diverse contributions will improve outcomes and impact. As an innovation researcher with a scientific background\, I have always been interested in the role of collaborative activity to successful (or otherwise) research projects. As we are well aware\, the development of social capital is viewed as essential to collaboration. \nOver the years I have explored what appears to support the building of social capital\, particularly when geographical proximity isn’t possible\, such as in international collaborations and/or virtual organisations. With Urs Daellenbach\, I published a paper on the role of social capital formation to a sense of identification in a virtual research organisation (British Journal of Management\, 22(1)\, 2011\, 54-76). \nOver ten years later\, I find myself as Director of another large virtual research programme\, the ‘Science for Technological Innovation” National Science Challenge (NSC)\, one of eleven New Zealand NSCs\, launched since 2016 (www.sftichallenge.govt.nz). As an experiment in how to build collaborative\, inter-disciplinary\, mission-led projects co-designed with industry and Māori (New Zealand’s indigenous population)\, those same social capital notions have underpinned many innovative processes that SfTI has developed. \nI will first describe these new or adapted processes and their social capital platform\, and then chat with Tristan about those SfTI experiences of the last 6 years.Time converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nAbout the presenter:\nSally Davenport is Professor of Management at Wellington School of Business & Government (VUW)\, and former Commissioner with the New Zealand Productivity Commission (2011-March 2020). Sally’s academic life began as a research chemist. With research interests covering the commercialisation of scientific research\, entrepreneurship and the growth of high-tech firms\, innovation strategy and policy\, Sally has led research grants covering projects on competitive advantage in New Zealand firms\, and sustainability and firm-level productivity in our biotechnology and food and beverage sectors. Sally is also an Adjunct Professor in the College of Business and Economics at the Australian National University\, a Fellow of the International Society for Professional Innovation Management\, a member of the NZ Institute of Directors\, and a member of Global Women. \nAbout Our Webinar Series\nThis event is part of our regular webinar sessions for social capital researchers including PhD/master students. SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Dr Mason Mathews: How social capital is created and maintained to achieve development goals
DESCRIPTION:Invited Speaker\nDr Mason Mathews\nAssistant Research Professor and Associate Director for Academic Integration and Alliances Knowledge Exchange for Resilience\nArizona State University \nCertificate of attendance available \n \n Certificate of attendance\n \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32icS5I3Lu8 \nSome development goals are unattainable with any one type of social capital; some goals require configurations of the three types of social capital. In some instances\, people create mutually reinforcing bonding\, bridging\, and linking social capital that enables them to achieve development goals\, while simultaneously expanding all three types of social capital. \nHowever\, the micro-sociological processes of building and maintaining the three types of social capital are not only difficult to combine\, but can be contradictory. Conflicts between micro-sociological processes can make it difficult to maintain mutually reinforcing social capital over time. Mixed methods approaches can generate a more holistic understanding of the micro-sociological processes that make social capital configurations possible. These same methods can be used to understand the contradictory micro-sociological processes that make social capital configurations difficult to sustain over time. In this discussion\, empirical research is used to illustrate one approach that combined the position generator method with ethnographic data to understand the processes that shaped mutually reinforcing social capital in riverine communities in the Brazilian Amazon. \nTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nAbout the presenter:\nMason Mathews is an assistant research professor at the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience (KER) in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University. Mason is interested in social network and social capital theories and methods and how they can be combined with geographic information systems to understand how communities and individuals respond to social\, economic\, and environmental shocks. \nMason’s current research focuses on how different types of collaboration shape societal outcomes and the resilience of individuals and communities. Mason is currently studying university-community partnerships\, inter-organizational collaboration\, and collaboration across nation-state boundaries. Mason’s research is designed not only to generate knowledge regarding these research topics\, but also to produce tools that can be used by different segments of society to enhance their capacity to form partnerships and collaborate across organizational\, disciplinary\, and geographic boundaries. \nAbout Our Webinar Series\nThis event is part of our regular webinar sessions for social capital researchers including PhD/master students.
