SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Building Social Capital Through Mentoring Programmes At The Goa School In India
DESCRIPTION:Home\n \n \n\n \n Events\n \n \n\nWEBINAR: Building Social Capital Through Mentoring Programmes At The Goa School In India\nFree Public Webinar on Zoom and YouTubeWednesday\, July 23\, 2025 @ 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm IST \nInvited Speakers\n \nJonathan Burton\nAdvisor to The Goa School \n \nMadhuri Dass Woudenberg\nFounder-Director of The Goa School \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fICWScw7cE8The Goa School started as a social impact enterprise\, with a light-touch but effective approach to building social capital in India — a country beset with inequalities as it develops into the third largest economy in the world. Some Indians have jobs\, income security\, housing and access to healthcare and education\, while the majority of others\, quite simply\, do not. Those being rapidly lifted out of poverty have little access to modern\, development ideas in practice\, such as gender justice or sustainable living\, and also lack the knowledge and networks to survive except at the fringes of society\, where life continues to be a struggle. The Goa School chooses Fellows from difficult circumstances\, with a penchant for changemaking\, and takes them through a five-day immersion program designed to make them reflect on themselves\, as well as the rights and circumstances of others\, to help them design change within themselves/their community\, and to participate in civic life as global citizens. The immersion program is followed by a year of 1:1 mentorship\, and graduation to The Goa School HIVE Mind\, an alumni group which allows for collective learning and brainstorming as well as networking across batches of Fellows\, Mentors and Speakers\, all of whom ‘give back’ to society by investing their knowledge and resources back into the group. The Goa School has demonstrated a mixed bag of results in three years of operation as a social impact enterprise\, and is carrying its learnings into its new avatar as a public Trust. Jonathan Burton and Madhuri Dass Woudenberg will present the work of The Goa School\, and gather inputs from the audience about how to sharpen their efforts to build social capital via the mentoring programme at The Goa School. \nTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nAbout the presenters:\nJonathan Burton is an advisor to The Goa School\, and has orchestrated hundreds of mentoring and capacity-building interventions throughout his career\, empowering communities\, building international solidarity and understanding. Today he on-boards new mentors to The Goa School and follows their work\, in addition to working as a part of an advisory group reporting to The Board Members of The Goa School Trust. Jonathan lives and works in Geneva\, Switzerland. Madhuri Dass Woudenberg is Founder-Director of The Goa School\, and brings 20 plus years of experience and connections from an international career in communications for sustainable development to each program at The Goa School\, where she curates spellbinding mentoring and learning experiences for young Indian changemakers\, designed to help them pursue compassionate and fulfilling lives. Madhuri lives and works in Goa\, India\, for a large part of the year. \nAbout Our Webinar Series\nThis event is part of our regular webinar sessions for social capital researchers including PhD/master students. SUMMARY:Social Capital Research Design and Methods
DESCRIPTION:A workshop discussing the research process with a focus on social capital research.\n\n\n\nAre you conducting research on social capital?\nWould you like to discuss or get some help with your research design?\nDo you have any problems or challenges with your research design?\n\nThese sessions are a supportive way to learn more about social capital research design and methods. You can connect with people\, ask questions\, get advice\, and discuss ideas or issues. \nWho is this for? \nAlthough this workshop is focused on PhD students\, we welcome anyone conducting research on social capital. \nWho will run the workshop? \nBeverly Sloan has a PhD in Organisational Leadership from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She is a veteran of the United States Air Force with more than 32 years of service. Her leisure activity includes mentoring masters and doctoral candidates on research practices. \nHow will the session work? \nIn these sessions\, we aim to discuss the research process. This includes defining research; discussing research significance\, problems\, and purposes; examining your worldview and philosophical stance; developing research questions\, sub-questions\, and hypotheses; and your theoretical or conceptual framework. We will discuss the initial literature review and its purpose in helping you build your initial central research question. We will use the initial research question to guide the preliminary literature review. During the preliminary literature review\, we will consider defining your key concepts and how they will drive your overall literature review. As we discuss the literature review\, the goal is to refine the research question\, identify gaps in the literature\, and focus the literature review on the central aspects of your research question. This should also help us develop a good outline for our literature review and identify variables or sub-research questions. Once we understand how the literature review shapes our study\, we will move on to research methods and design or our roadmap for collecting data. Then we will move on to data analysis and conclude by combining all the pieces. This will not be a linear process\, but it will be a process. \nAccess requirements \nWe seek to make our events accessible\, and this is no exception. If there is something that will help you to engage more effectively in this session\, please email us on: events@intsocialcapital.org. Sometimes\, it’s the small things that make a big difference\, so do email us if you have an access request. We recognise that not all participants are able to attend all sessions for the full duration. You are free to join us and leave at any time during the session. We request that you have your name on Zoom (this can be just a first name) to make it easier for us to facilitate the session and address participants correctly. It helps to have cameras on\, but we recognise that sometimes this isn’t possible\, for a variety of reasons.
