SUMMARY:Social Capital Research Design and Methods
DESCRIPTION:A workshop discussing the research process with a focus on social capital research.\n\n\n\nAre you conducting research on social capital?\nWould you like to discuss or get some help with your research design?\nDo you have any problems or challenges with your research design?\n\nThese sessions are a supportive way to learn more about social capital research design and methods. You can connect with people\, ask questions\, get advice\, and discuss ideas or issues. \nWho is this for? \nAlthough this workshop is focused on PhD students\, we welcome anyone conducting research on social capital. \nWho will run the workshop? \nBeverly Sloan has a PhD in Organisational Leadership from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She is a veteran of the United States Air Force with more than 32 years of service. Her leisure activity includes mentoring masters and doctoral candidates on research practices. \nHow will the session work? \nIn these sessions\, we aim to discuss the research process. This includes defining research; discussing research significance\, problems\, and purposes; examining your worldview and philosophical stance; developing research questions\, sub-questions\, and hypotheses; and your theoretical or conceptual framework. We will discuss the initial literature review and its purpose in helping you build your initial central research question. We will use the initial research question to guide the preliminary literature review. During the preliminary literature review\, we will consider defining your key concepts and how they will drive your overall literature review. As we discuss the literature review\, the goal is to refine the research question\, identify gaps in the literature\, and focus the literature review on the central aspects of your research question. This should also help us develop a good outline for our literature review and identify variables or sub-research questions. Once we understand how the literature review shapes our study\, we will move on to research methods and design or our roadmap for collecting data. Then we will move on to data analysis and conclude by combining all the pieces. This will not be a linear process\, but it will be a process. \nAccess requirements \nWe seek to make our events accessible\, and this is no exception. If there is something that will help you to engage more effectively in this session\, please email us on: events@intsocialcapital.org. Sometimes\, it’s the small things that make a big difference\, so do email us if you have an access request. We recognise that not all participants are able to attend all sessions for the full duration. You are free to join us and leave at any time during the session. We request that you have your name on Zoom (this can be just a first name) to make it easier for us to facilitate the session and address participants correctly. It helps to have cameras on\, but we recognise that sometimes this isn’t possible\, for a variety of reasons.

SUMMARY:Exploring the outcomes of social capital
DESCRIPTION:Tristan Claridge\nPresident\nInternational Social Capital Association \n \n Register for free\n \n Time converter at worldtimebuddy.comTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nSocial capital has been described by some authors as lubricating the fabric of society and allowing modern economies to function efficiently (Fukuyama 2001). It is claimed that our society\, economy\, institutions\, and political system could not exist without social capital; it is a glue that holds society and institutions together and lubricates their function. \nHowever\, social capital remains an elusive concept\, difficult to define\, involving uncertain processes\, and yet charged with important outcomes. The academic literature is typically vague about what it is\, what it does\, and the mechanisms that produce the claimed outcomes. \nThis webinar will explore the outcomes of social capital. From the literature\, it is clear social capital does something\, and that something relates to people’s actions. Many scholars state that it facilitates cooperation and collective action\, results in information flows\, reduced transaction costs\, social introductions\, and many other actions. However\, is it all social action or only certain actions? I will explore different types of action and consider which types are outcomes of social capital and which are not. Exploring the outcomes of social capital is useful in identifying what it is and separating it from what it does. \nTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com \n \nAbout the presenter:\nTristan Claridge has been researching and applying social capital for over 20 years. Tristan is a geographer and environmental scientist with a passion for social processes and how social value is identified and communicated. Tristan has a deep and grounded understanding of social capital and its application\, having worked on the concept from theoretical and practical perspectives. He draws on lessons from economics\, sociology\, political science\, psychology\, urban planning\, and any other discipline that contributes understanding to the concept. In addition to his practical work with the concept\, Tristan has been an active contributor to the academic debate about social capital. He has written over 200 open-access articles on social capital and related topics and is actively engaged in ongoing research. \nAbout Our Webinar Series\nThis event is part of our regular webinar sessions for social capital researchers including PhD/master students. These sessions include invited presentations from prominent scholars as well as presentations by PhD students and experts in professional practice.\nFor social capital researchers\, these sessions are an opportunity to hear about the latest social capital research and insights from scholars working on the concept. They can be a great way to connect with people\, to get advice\, discuss ideas or issues\, get suggestions for literature to read\, or you can just listen. \nAre you researching social capital and want to present your research? Click here for more information and to submit a proposal. \nGenerally\, presentations can be 20 to 30 mins. The content of your presentation will depend on your research stage.

SUMMARY:The High Cost of Cheap Social Capital Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Please join Professor Lindon Robison and Tristan Claridge on March 22\, 2023 webinar\, as we revisit our 2021 discussion of cheap social capital. Since introducing the concept of cheap social capital in our earlier webinar\, Professor Robison has written two important papers on the subject and has made these available on the Institute for Social Capital’s website. In our March 22\, 2023 webinar\, we will discuss these papers\, The Cheap Side of Social Capital and the High Cost of Cheap Social Capital and revisit our discussion of the connections between social capital and cheap social capital\, what explains the popularity of cheap social capital and why it is cheap\, how to recognize cheap social capital networks\, and how to mitigate the high cost of cheap social capital. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Lindon J. Robison has recently retired. He was a Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AFRE) in the tenure stream at Michigan State University from 1977 to 2021. He holds a B.S. degree from Utah State University\, an M.S. degree from the University of Illinois\, and a Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University. He has published numerous books and articles\, including the text for the department’s capstone Agri-business management course 435\, which he also taught. He also taught AFRE graduate courses in calculus for economists\, mathematical statistics\, and mathematical programming. He has consulted for governments\, firms\, and international organizations such as the World Bank\, particularly in Latin America. He has worked for the US Government as an agricultural economist\, has been a visiting faculty member at Brigham Young University\, the University of Minnesota\, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala Sweden. He has won many academic awards including Best Ph.D. thesis for his work on risk and portfolio management of rural banks and in 2012 was made a fellow of the Institutional and Behavioral Economics section of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA). His most frequently cited works include The Competitive Firm’s Response to Risk which he authored with Peter J. Barry and “Is Social Capital Really Capital?” which he authored with Allan A. Schmid and Marcelo E. Siles. His pioneering research focuses on the role of social capital (relationships of caring\, trust\, and regard) on establishing the terms and level of trade—that has been applied to minimum sell land and car prices\, the likelihood of loan approval\, and medical screen decisions. His most recent publications describe social capital motives and distinguish between relational goods and commodities. \nThis event may be recorded\, and the recording made available on Youtube for public viewing. SUMMARY:Social Capital Research Design and Methods
DESCRIPTION:Are you conducting research on social capital?\nWould you like to discuss or get some help with your research design?\nDo you have any problems or challenges with your research design?\n\n\nRegister for free on Eventbrite\n \nThese sessions are a supportive way to learn more about social capital research design and methods. This includes defining research; discussing research significance\, problems\, and purposes; examining your worldview and philosophical stance; developing research questions\, sub-questions\, and hypotheses; and your theoretical framework. \nWe will discuss the preliminary literature review and its purpose in helping you build your initial research question. Another key aim of the preliminary literature review is to consider the definition of your key concepts and how that will drive your literature review. As we discuss the literature review\, the goal is to refine the research question\, identify gaps in the literature\, and focus the literature review on the key aspects of your research question. This should also help us develop a good outline for our literature review and identify variables or sub-research questions. \nOnce we understand how the literature review shapes our study\, we will move on to research methods and design. \nWe recognise that not all participants are able to attend all sessions for the full duration. SUMMARY:Minority racial concentration and COVID-19: The mediating role of social capital
DESCRIPTION:Invited Speaker\nDr Cary Wu\nAssistant Professor of Sociology \nYork University \n \n Register for free\n \n Time converter at worldtimebuddy.comTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com \nGrowing research suggests that areas with higher concentrations of racial and ethnic minorities have experienced more negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this webinar\, I will consider the mediating role of social capital in the effect of minority racial concentration on COVID-19 infection. I separate between two major dimensions of social capital\, namely\, cohesion social capital and network social capital\, and consider how they might mediate the association differently. On one hand\, network social capital in the forms of network connections and participation in social activities often promote more human to human contacts that could lead to the spread of the virus. On the other hand\, cohesion social capital in the forms of social trust and political confidence can endow individuals with greater concern for others and high compliance with control measures that could help reduce the potential spread. In the first study\, I focus on 140 Toronto Neighborhoods. Combining the data from the 2018 Toronto Social Capital Study (Environics Institute) and Toronto Neighborhood Pandemic Profile\, I show that neighborhoods with higher levels of minority racial concentration show higher COVID-19 infection rates. I also show that cohesion social capital has a positive impact on reducing COVID-19 infection\, while network social capital has a negative impact. However\, they both play significant roles in mediating the association between minority concentration on COVID-19 infection. In the second study\, I focus on over 3000 US counties. Combining data from the Social Capital Project (SCP) of the United States Congress’s Joint Economic Committee with the county-level information on COVID-19 from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention\, I replicate the first study. The patterns are consistent: higher levels of minority concentration are associated with higher COVID-19 infection rates. Cohesion social capital and network social capital show differential impacts\, but they both significantly mediate the effect of minority concentration on COVID-19 infection. Results from these two studies illustrate that lack of social capital is one central mechanism underlying how racial and ethnic minorities experience the pandemic differently. Findings of this research also demonstrate the need to be more explicit about social capital’s different forms and how they may affect social outcomes differently. \nTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com \n \nAbout the presenter:\nCary Wu is Assistant Professor of Sociology at York University. His research focuses on political culture\, race and ethnicity\, and inequality. He often shares his research with the public via national and international TV\, radio\, and newspaper forums including NPR\, CBC\, CTV\, The Washington Post\, Toronto Star\, Macleans\, and The Economist.

\nWe recognise that not all participants are able to attend all sessions for the full duration. You are free to join us and leave at any time during the session. \nWe request that you have your name on Zoom (this can be just a first name) to make it easier for us to facilitate the session and address participants correctly. It helps to have cameras on\, but we recognise that sometimes this isn’t possible\, for a variety of reasons.

This time\, facilitator Emily Pitts will share her social capital story before welcoming everyone into the main event – Networking. \nOur networking format is evolving and therefore we will elicit your feedback at the end of the session\, in order to develop future networking sessions.
